A Lakeside Retreat Makes the Perfect Family Staycation

Although my husband and I have resided in Halifax County since retiring, we wanted to plan a lakeside staycation, where we could entertain our whole family—including our four-footed companion—in our beautiful new hometown. I put together some ideas for what everyone would want to do and see and found that, indeed, perhaps staying local and exploring with the eyes of a tourist is the best way to enjoy familiar places.

Finding the Perfect Home

I found several vacation rental agencies in the area that offer a wide array of homes and condos at various prices. We ended up booking a lovely waterfront home in Littleton through Story Properties on Lake Gaston that met all of our needs, including its wheelchair accessibility and pet-friendliness.

What’s more, the home features a boathouse with a lift—perfect for us, as we had hoped to bring along our boat to enjoy the lake. The house sleeps 10 people, so there will be plenty of room for everyone, including the grandkids and the dog.

Activities for All Ages

Although the rental house features an expansive deck and access to the water, I knew we’d still want to get out and explore the area a bit. I discovered that a free outdoor concert would be held during our stay at the Ed Fitts Outdoor Amphitheater at the Acorn Center in Littleton. We’ll have to make sure to pack our picnic blankets and lawn chairs for that!

I also thought that some of us would enjoy an outing to Frank’s Fine Arts in downtown Littleton. Perusing handmade crafts and artworks is a favorite pastime for my daughter and me, and taking some girls’ time would give the men time on their own to make their own memories.

For the kids, a class at WakeSurf NC would be just the thing to inject some fun into their stay. The instructors start off with basic skills, such as holding the rope and firmly planting your feet on the board, before advancing to actually skimming along the waves. That takes away any worries I had about our grandchildren going faster than their abilities allow for!

Of course, we also need to make some plans for our dog, Max, to have a great time. We’ll definitely take some hikes on the trails at Medoc Mountain State Park. I also learned there’s a free dog park at the visitor center in Roanoke Rapids, where our pup might find a friend to play with. To be honest, however, Max will likely spend his time lounging on the deck or splashing in the lake, where he can be with family and chill out.

Eating and Drinking Locally

Mexican cuisine is always a hit at family dinners, and I was excited to see that Littleton has Cancun City Mexican Kitchen. I checked out the extensive menu, and I’m sure everyone will find the perfect meal. Personally, I plan to start with one of their delicious-looking margaritas and definitely leave room for some fried ice cream for dessert.

Our family also enjoys Italian food, so we’ll plan to dine at Casa Mia’s. With pizza, hot and cold subs, wings, pasta, seafood, and daily dinner specials, it will be difficult to decide what to order. I’ll just have to see what I’m in the mood for that night!

As many of us enjoy a tasty microbrew, I was excited to learn that Littleton is home to Timber Waters Brewery. With both indoor and outdoor seating available, we’ll be sure to enjoy our visit, no matter the weather. Plus, according to the brewery’s website, they not only source local ingredients for their beers, but they also give back to the community, which is always a plus in my book.

All in all, I’m looking forward to seeing my family enjoy themselves here in Halifax County. My husband and I may call this area home, but spending time in a lakeside rental and seeing all the new sights through my family’s eyes will make this a vacation to treasure.
