Get Out on the Water in Halifax County

IMG_4513-001.JPG

Embrace Your Sporty Side

Straddling the border between North Carolina’s Halifax County and Virginia’s Brunswick County lies Lake Gaston, a premiere destination for all types of watersports. With its glassy conditions, Lake Gaston is the perfect place to try waterskiing, wake surfing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. While these adrenaline-pumping sports might seem difficult at first, you’ll get the hang of them quickly!

If you’d prefer to try a calmer watersport while out on the lake, Lake Gaston Outfitters rents kayaking and stand-up paddle boarding gear. As an added bonus, this local company also sells fishing equipment, which is wonderful, considering the fact that Weldon in Halifax County is often called the “Rockfish Capital of the World.” Regardless of which watersport you choose, you’ll have a fantastic time at this picture-perfect lake. For a complete list of outfitters, check out our list at visithalifax.com.

While Lake Gaston is ideal for watersports that require calm, flat waters, Roanoke River is great for activities that thrive with a bit of a current. The most popular Roanoke River watersports are canoeing and kayaking. Within the Roanoke River Basin, there are actually over 140 miles of water trails for you to paddle along, so you’ll want to dedicate an entire day to seeing everything this river has to offer. If you keep your eyes open and your arms pumping, you’ll be able to see tree tunnels, river otters, white-tailed deer, beavers, black bears, and more.

Gearing up for an active day in Halifax County is easy when there are so many great places to eat.  The Blue Jay Bistro and Daphne’s Coffee Shop are arguably two of the best, both located in Littleton. In fact, these two new establishments are neighbors.

Named for Littleton matriarch & artist Daphne Fitts, Daphne’s Coffee Shop serves gourmet coffee – ground and brewed fresh daily. They offer a full coffee program with trained baristas and complement it with baked goods and desserts to enjoy with your coffee.  Looking for something cooler with your pastry? Daphne’s Coffee Shop offers a wide array of juices, sparkling waters, and loose-leaf teas. It’s a great way to start your active adventure in Halifax County.

Blue Jay Bistro’s tagline is “escape the ordinary.”  The Bistro features a bar, outdoor dining, and event space, and is one of the newest additions to Halifax County’s culinary scene. Blue Jay Bistro’s executive chef, Ashley Fleming, is a native Texan and strives to bring a hint of Texas twang to their Southern-inspired menu.
